Is it a bird , is it a plane? NO even better it's salt! reading through this chapter shows salts effect on civilization. Salt has rocked the Egyptians world ( it's what came to mind ok). Well it did basically. They used to salt fish, birds, and other fine foods for the rich folks of Egypt. Salt was also used with other salt mixtures to preserve mummies in the tomb. The richer you were the better salt treatment you got. Egyptians exported a great amount of salted foods! Eat UP!
While I was reading chapter 2 , i thought how do they tote that salt around. Well my question was answered. Egyptians along with other societies used oxen, horse drawn chariots , and later the domestic Camel.... Salt was so important to people back then that they trade a set amount of salt for gold. Salt even help the Egyptians make other foods from gross olive trees to a yummy food. This book so far shows salt as a universal substance. This helped Egypt with exporting olive oil also. What can't salt do?
Salt seemed to be used as a communication device. It connected cultures as they trade salt for gold. Now it would take a bulk amount of salt . No words were spoken on either side. It may have taken several day , but everyone seemed to speak the language of salt.

Nice introduction, way to get creative. I think that salt can do everything and probably fix any problem, it is just that amazing. I thought it was pretty cool how the Egyptians were so resourceful with it. It was cool how the Egyptians were able to make the olives taste ten times better by just adding a pinch of salt. Salt is just overall amazing!!
I don't know what salt can't do! It can do everything!
Anyway, I thought it was weird that salt symbolized wealth. If it symbolized wealth today then everyone would be considered rich pretty much.
The olive part kind of grossed me out in the chapter because olives are just..ehh..very gross to me! But it was neat how they figured out to make them edible!
Good post Katie!
You used a pun! megan does that too...but of course your's are funnier than hers
I think its funny how social statis is obtained by how much salt you got in your bank. If it were like that today my grandpa would so win...he just had surgery from major blockage in his throat from eating waaay too much salt. but anyway
I'm beginning to be freaked out by salt to tell you the truth. Its creepy how civilizations used it as a way of currency and a life style.
everytime i read this book i get a craving for jerky, why i dont know, but anyways... how much is a senta exactly. we should figure this out...and you should go in with the rest of us, we're pitchin in to help lori afford her chinese surgery...yeah, i dont think youll get that one but whateva, i havent talked to you in forever so i decided to post a comment, isnt it fascinating...anyways, get back to me on the senta thing, for some reason its bothering me
One of the reasons I introduced this book later into Oct., was so that you folks would have somewhat of a background on thes ancient cultures. (Egypt, Greece, Rome, etc.)
Cool quote: "The richer you were the better salt treatment you got."
Can you go more into specifics? It would help the length of your posts?
Salt being worth gold should help show its value back in those days. I'm with you on olives, as I don't care for them either.
Interesing idea: "Salt seemed to be used as a communication device. It connected cultures as they trade salt for gold."
Nice ideas, just wish you had a bit more for each post.
